riverember

huge month for river
three back to back readings--

this river:

boz, river returnee pathogen free
ben, back with the surreal
amanda, a new river to welcome
and j.t. , bold river regular

evening corpse:

weekend saw shippy drinking wind
big scissors can’t cut drunk roadrunner
he put his hand on my fruit and cried “help!”
the ants
in my car taste like plastic
better than rotten coffee glued to my favorite mug
science experiment in dirty dishes
no, seriously, what fuck are we supposed
to do with this shit?
for the love of what the fuck next
I stand with no memory
sicken chicken wing
show me a ninja switch around our knuckles
because knuckles buckle, I munch glass
wind bottles my signature blown out of my ass
times amount you bang your head against the wall
before you realize the wall exits for you
there is fog in the room. there is no room.
I meant foyer and I meant zoom and I meant rain
yesterday I forgot to turn off the raindrops. I want you to say so.
I’m siiiinggging in the spriinkkleerrr!
wwwater on my fingers
fishing in lemonade
in the trees, dripping like honey, your face on a coin
I fingered that coin till I memorized the amnesia
and quiet takes me out of the conversation
bow my head and contemplate
never thoughts drinking out of the lines

obama's river

May 12, 2009, 6:00 am
Set the Dial for AM 1600
By Rachel L. Swarns

On tap at the White House on Tuesday night? A poetry jam — with smooth jazz, cool verses and spoken word. The literary and musical event in the East Room will include the actor James Earl Jones, the writers Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman (who are husband and wife), the jazz singer and bassist Esperanza Spalding and the pianist Eric Lewis. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote and starred in “In the Heights,” the Broadway musical that won a Tony last year, will also perform. It is part of an effort by the Obamas to open up the White House and celebrate the country’s diverse art scenes. The event, which is scheduled to begin at 7:45 p.m., will be shown live at www.whitehouse.gov.

pile up the corpses

in remembrance

—for a corpse

don’t forget

6 o’clock floor over May
corpus take us
to where we need
the promised exploding applause
fail the river without drowning

to where we need to
look into
bottoms of glasses and recognize
we are their fathers

farther away than the river
we weren’t afraid until hope
broke open on the concrete bank
and in the distance
only main street
and a new shopping center

tattooed utterances
spelled out our name’s pretty guts

when they put them back in they said
you should be more careful with those
try it now
we think now
we have had enough

we want out
but
always remember
do not savor
milestones mill steel river roll
ever sweltered knees
kneel to violent pussies
and opium breasted nurses
black will be your verses

or not do whatever you want

pile up the corpses

so in the interest of getting things started as far as posting some collaborations and bringing a little life to these posts--can't bear the word blog. here's a record of Exceptionalism's Flag Day.

this birth of our shitty flag

this brahman beats his wife
a bro-man beat this bitch
after all this andrei’s on this dash
this intersection
dangerous if you don’t look
look at this we fit in the fridge
never use this word: “network”
in a puddle
bob dylan or sting write
songs with their bare hands
never have made this fist
won’t kill them just beat them
with this rusty sword

at least this napkin’s gettin wet
one for drying one for wetting
us for those of this old
fifteen years ago smoke stacks
cooled baton rouge
summer’s almost here
this solution to global warming
is pollution or confusion
spies saluting
that’s a good fucking line
where my motherfuckers
when I need them smoking
on the fire escape

blinking lure snags this throat
ships in waters this bad juke box song
encourages all night wrongs
right
foot left brain
looks like an elephant head or horse balls
a time machine just leapt
up this nose grows
back to stone
pick my boogers, baby
or I’ll stab myself with this straw
where you are drawing our flag

not a caricature of some asian guy
who hugged my first mate
and played terrible songs

so tell central quit playing songs
and start fishing puddles
once this awhile

dirty birds fish worms
out of a sea this familiar
sailing on forfeited fares
pirating this mind
already entertained
taking them to this place
already conquered
faltered

I got this flu
don’t want to hear your ewww
shit this getting terrible now
better bring this river to my door
before I drown like vince
this always paying tolls
just get this ass across
quit telling this what to do
this isn’t this so quit yelling

In celebration and reverence for LA carnival, we are only having one super reading this month.

In addition to these fine poets, Rich Cooper, WOMP innovator, will be reading. I apologize to Rich for not getting him on the poster; I think I may have been in parade mode when he accepted his River fate.

The Second Coming

This will be our second coming. Come.

There will be a single poem, six slot open mix preceding the readings.

We are fortunate to have Dave Brinks, a New Orleans Poet headlining.

Our Grand Reading

This was the first reading to kick off the series. Kristen Foster Unfortunately could not make it and fellow river Christopher Shipman got down on this zebradangle instead. We celebrate love down by the river.
